Martin Setchell

Martin Setchell (born 1949) is a distinguished New Zealand concert organist, recording artist, and educator, internationally recognized for his vibrant performances and expertise in the French romantic organ repertoire. His career spans decades, marked by a dedication to both performance and pedagogy.

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Setchell received his early musical education there before furthering his studies in England and France. He holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Canterbury and studied organ with renowned teachers, including Sir William McKie at Westminster Abbey and Jean Guillou in Paris. These experiences profoundly shaped his interpretive style and understanding of organ music.

For many years, Martin Setchell served as the City Organist of Christchurch, a prestigious role that saw him perform regularly on the magnificent Rieger organ in the Christchurch Town Hall. He was instrumental in promoting organ music within New Zealand and beyond, organizing concerts and educational initiatives.

Setchell is particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of French organ music, especially the works of composers like Franck, Widor, Dupré, and Messiaen. His recordings, many made on significant organs around the world, have received critical acclaim for their technical brilliance and musical insight. He has released numerous CDs, showcasing a wide range of repertoire.

Through publishers such as Oxford University Press and Kevin Mayhew, he has also released several volumes of organ transcriptions of works by composers including Saint-Saëns, Purcell, Bach, and Verdi.

Beyond his performance career, Setchell has been a dedicated educator. He taught organ at the University of Canterbury for many years, nurturing a new generation of organists. He is also a sought-after adjudicator and lecturer at international organ festivals and competitions.

His commitment to music was recognized in 2008 when he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to music. Following the devastating 2011 Christchurch earthquake, which severely damaged the Town Hall organ, Setchell played a crucial role in the fundraising and restoration efforts, advocating passionately for the instrument's return.
